The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical - Mythical Fun for the Whole Family!

Wednesday, October 2, 2019
If you're looking for a fun show on Broadway to bring your kiddos to, I have the musical for you! Fans of the beloved Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan will find their favorite hero in a fabulous musical in New York City, but only for a limited run! The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical is playing at the Longacre Theater now through January 5th.

Disclosure: I was provided tickets to the show in order to facilitate this review, but all opinions are my own!

About the Show

Percy Jackson doesn't know it right away, but he is a son of Poseidon! With newly discovered powers that he can't control, monsters on his trail and a handful of misfit friends, Percy is no ordinary teenager. And now he's on a quest to find Zeus' lightning bolt to prevent a war between the Greek gods. The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical has a fun, upbeat, original rock score. It features a talented cast with simple scenery (cast doesn't change costumes), but will keep you entertained and bouncing in your seat. I think it's great for ages 8 and up, with nothing overly scary or upsetting (there are a few crazy creatures and red-eyed bad guys, but I think most kids will be okay with this - you know your child best!). Not only does this show contain catchy songs that you'll be singing in your kitchen for weeks to come, but it also inspires an interest in mythology. The cast is so talented and engaging. You don't want to miss it! (I also have to add that the actors are really well cast- they really seem to fit their parts. For example, as soon as we saw Chris McCarrell, the actor who portrays Percy, my son said out loud, 'He really looks like Percy.' I found this to be true for all of the characters! So this is something that fans of the book series might appreciate.).

Do You Need to Read the Books First?

Nope! I think anyone would enjoy the show, even if you are not familiar with the Percy Jackson series of books or the movies. That being said, you might need to explain some terminology to kids, like 'halfblood,' which is used a lot in the show (Percy's dad is Poseidon and his mom is human). You also might need to just go over some basics of what mythology is and who the Greek gods were in a nutshell.
