10 Fun School Supplies You'll Want to Add to Your List

Sunday, August 27, 2023
It's hard to believe that it's Back to School time again. Many of us already have huge supply lists from our school districts to contend with, but let's not forget about the fun stuff! Let's bring the joy back to school supply shopping! Take a look at some of these cute, unique, silly, or just plain fun items to add to your back to school agenda. And guess what? You can buy most of them (if not all) online! So you don't even need to leave your house. Do I have you covered or what?

Disclosure: I received some items as samples but these did not influence my opinion. This post contains Amazon affiliate links. You can read more about my affiliate links on my Disclosure page.

A variation of this post, Must-Have School Supplies for 2019, appeared over at The Toy Insider last month. I am a proud member of the Toy Insider's Parent Panel, so I'm excited to share both of these posts with you.

1. Scentco

It's no secret that I love everything Scentco makes. How can you not? With products that range from stuffed animals to their famous scented items (like Smencils!), they seem to appeal to every generation. This year you can check out their Plush Crush, which is a small plastic ball that kids can throw and break open. Inside is a cute plush character that they can hang on their backpacks or lockers. My favorite Scentco items are their writing tools, like their Smarkers, Smens and Cutie Fruities notebook sets. They also have adorable scented pencil cases, soft and fluffy with kawaii faces to match. You can find them at https://www.scentcoinc.com/ or through these Amazon affiliate links:

Plush Crush
Gamer Smencils
Smarkers
Tri-Color Smens
Cutie Fruities

2. Crayola Take Note Products

Don't you just love Crayola? They are really everyone's 'go-to' school supply. They're a brand that everyone knows and trusts, and you can count on them to deliver quality products. Plus, they are connected to all of our childhoods. Who didn't grow up with Crayola crayons in their home, after all? Now Crayola has an awesome line called Take Note, and they are really appealing to that tween/teen generation (who are so hard to shop for, right?!). They offer a variety of fun Take Note items, including:

Washable Gel Pens
Felt Tip Pens
Erasable Highlighters
Dry Erase Markers
Dual Tip Highlighter Pens
Permanent Markers

My absolute favorites are the erasable highlighters. Not only is it super-cool that you can erase your highlighting mark, but you can also get creative with them and make designs in your highlight with the eraser-point end. I have a lot of fun with these, believe me!

And I am really excited to start using their Take Note Permanent Markers for my school lunch box notes. You can read about them here and see how I create the notes to help with our 'back to school anxiety.'

3. Squishmallows Clip-Ons

I'm always singing Squishmallows praises, aren't I? I can't help it, I just love 'em so! I love the entire Squishmallows line (check out all of my Squishmallows posts here), but I especially love their clip-on Squishmallows, which are perfect for backpacks and lockers. You can even hang them in your car! There's nothing like a little plush friend to take with you on your every day adventures. You can find them in most retailers (Target, Walgreens, Five Below, Shop Rite, etc.) or in their online store. You can also find them on Amazon, although you may pay a little more for them there.

4. Vaultz Boxes

Everyone needs their own little private space, right? Even if kids don't use these in school, I think these Vaultz locking pencil boxes are so cute for all of their treasures. They come in a ton of different styles and colors. I have my eye on that pink one!

5. OmieBox

I don't know about you, but sometimes I find it hard to fit everything into my kiddo's lunch box, especially now that he's getting older. The OmieBox is pretty cool because not only does it have heavy duty durability, but it's also similar to a traveling Bento box. With separate compartments for hot and cold items, you can fit just about everything in there! I also think it would be kind of fun to stick stickers all over the outside of it, but maybe that's just me? 🤷‍♀️

6. Chalk-of-the-Town

I have loved Chalk-of-the-Town products for years (you can check out my review post here) and even featured them in this month's Toy Insider post because I think their products are so fun and ingenious. How cute is it to be able to design your own t-shirt for the first day of school, or make yourself a tote bag for September? The best part is that you can create your design with chalk markers, wipe them off and design again! They come in adult sizes, too. You can find Chalk-of-the-Town products on Amazon or visit https://www.chalk-of-the-town.com/.

7. Trapper Keepers

Mead has resurrected their beloved Trapper Keepers from the 1980's, but I specifically love this cool R2D2 version (which was NOT available in the 80's, I might add!). Trapper Keepers hold a nostalgic value for my generation. I was actually thinking of buying one for my own stuff! If the R2D2 Trapper is no longer available, check out some of their other 1980's style Trapper Keepers instead.

8.  Scratch and Sniff Sticker Club

A few months ago I reviewed the Scratch and Sniff Sticker Club and I totally fell in love with it! Talk about 80's nostalgia! But I love the idea of crossing it with 'Back to School,' too. It can be a fun Back to School gift for the kiddos, or even something teachers might like to try for their classrooms. The selection of stickers sent every month is really amazing, and you get a lot for your money! Check them out on their website.

9. ZIPIT Pencil Cases

I'm a sucker for cute pencil cases. The new ZIPIT cases are adorable, aren't they? They come in a variety of colors, and each color offers up a different face/design. I like them because of their size and rounded edges. They're pretty sturdy and roomy, too. If you're not crazy about the silly faces, they also come in a decorated variety, with no faces and different colors/patterns.

10. 3 Doodler Start

I know, I know, the 3 Doodler Start RoboSumo isn't really a 'school supply,' but I have a kiddo who really despises school. I like the idea of having something fun and creative for him to come home to. It's also perfect for school projects, since you can create a variety of different things with it. It's almost like a 3D printer in pen form. It was really easy to use and as soon as my son opened the box, he was dying to try it! The 3 Doodler Start RoboSumo is a kit that comes with a handheld 'pen.' Kids can use the stencils to create 3D images in varying colors. This kit enabled my son to make mini robots. It came with everything we needed and even had a little "ring" included for the robots to wrestle in. You can check out all of their products at https://the3doodler.com/start/. If you can't find the 3 Doodler Robosumo and you just want to try out one of their classic 3 Doodler Pens, check out this style here

So here's hoping these fun items will bring us into an awesome school year! I know that sometimes even these little items make a big difference in helping to ease the anxiety of a child. Happy School Year, everyone!

  1. We got a Vaultz case this year! It was the one thing my guy was most excited about. He is nervous about loosing the keys though, so I have one at home and one at school. He ended up not needing a pencil case, but he’s keeping other “treasures” in it.

  2. My favorite school supply would be pens and notebooks even now that I'm out of school. I see a pen or notebook that I love and I can't help but buy it.
