Whether you've been through this before, or whether you're new to the process and need to start researching, support is critical. But how can you do this? What should you be doing? Ask Them What They Need from You
First, think about what they need from you, but try not to make all of the decisions for them. Ask them what you can do to help. Try not to bulldoze in and start handing out orders when they’re learning to figure things out on their own. Instead, think of yourself more as an assistant than a parent, and do what you can to guide them. Listen to them and give feedback, but try to let them steer the ship. It might be hard sometimes to hold back, but it will be best for them in the long run.
Don’t Force Your Opinions
As previously mentioned, you don't want to be forcing your ideas and opinions on your college student. As hard as it may seem, remember that it’s their life, and part of the process is letting them make their own decisions. If they are relying on your financial support and you are not able to cover the cost of the college they have chosen, then they'll have to learn to apply for loans, get a job, or choose a more affordable university for their needs. Just remember that your financial support doesn't mean you have the right to control them.
Look Through Everything Together
Finally, you need to help your college student come up with a plan. Visit various colleges, look at different degree programs, check out housing options and help them navigate these decisions. If they ask your opinion, give it to them. If they want to make these decisions, let them. Some direction can be as simple as making sure they check their emails and fill out forms properly.
Helping your child prepare for college can really be a bonding experience like no other, so make the most of it while you can, and don't sweat the small stuff!
