Hats, Hearts and Hope for the Future: Inside the SMYH Foundation’s Kentucky Derby Luncheon

Saturday, May 9, 2026
There’s nothing quite like Kentucky Derby season, especially when it’s paired with fashion, philanthropy, and an afternoon dedicated to giving back. This year, the SMYH Foundation brought elegance and excitement to Bedminster, New Jersey for its annual SMYH Foundation Kentucky Derby Luncheon, which gathered supporters, community leaders, and guests for an unforgettable celebration inspired by the Run for the Roses.

The SMYH Foundation Kentucky Derby Luncheon blended Southern charm with upscale sophistication. Guests arrived dressed in vibrant spring fashion, complete with elaborate Derby hats, floral dresses and statement accessories that perfectly captured the spirit of the iconic horse racing tradition. This was my first Kentucky Derby party ever, so I was extremely excited to wear an elegant hat. And it's funny what an accessory like this will do for you. I really felt amazing.

But the event was more than just a stylish social gathering. The SMYH Foundation (short for Show Me Your Heart) is dedicated to supporting and empowering youth through educational and community-focused initiatives. The organization’s mission centers on helping young people expand and thrive, especially in arts and music. Chairperson Heather Choi has devoted her life to creating meaningful opportunities for young people to serve, lead and grow. My teenage son is a musician, so I really appreciate anything that focuses on helping young people, especially when it comes to art and music.

Throughout the afternoon, attendees enjoyed a lively atmosphere filled with networking, dining, and entertainment, which was emceed by Xen Sams, Matt Serino and Karolina Dehnhard. From photo ops to an exciting live auction and raffle, the luncheon delivered an experience that felt both fun and meaningful. And did I mention how delicious the food was? They offered a full buffet with something for everyone, and an outstanding dessert table with fruits and sweets. You can check out my instagram reel of the food offerings here

Art, fashion and music took center stage at the event. Guests were treated to a live painting performance by Tato Lovere, as well as a stunning fashion show by L'Fay Bridal NY. There was a beautiful art exhibition by Catherine Schmitt and a variety of musical performances for entertainment. These included pianist Tahir J. Anthony, vocalists Valeriia and Dave Ko, and Justine Yoon's trio of young violinists (I can attest that all of the performances were incredible!). DJ Johnny closed out the afternoon with a fun dance party on the dance floor. Of course I was up there, even in my heels and hat! I can never resist a dance floor.

But when it all comes down to it, the true heart of the afternoon was philanthropy. Events like this play an important role in helping nonprofit organizations continue their outreach and charitable programs. By combining community engagement with fundraising efforts, the SMYH Foundation continues to create opportunities that positively impact young people and families.
