East of Wall: A Spoiler-Free Review of this Must-See Docu-Fiction Film

Wednesday, August 13, 2025
I can’t say enough good things about East of Wall. In a (very brief) nutshell, East of Wall is about a horse trainer who wrestles with financial issues and unresolved grief while hosting a group of wayward teenagers on her ranch in South Dakota. And here's my take: this movie is real. I’m so tired of perfect Hollywood, where every actor and actress has a flawless face and sculpted body (I’m looking at you, Taylor Sheridan, with your 1833 and 1923 families and their perfect white teeth and porcelain skin in the middle of the wild west). East of Wall is a docu-fiction film- it’s reality, it’s raw. The movie is like getting a peek into the ‘characters’ lives as opposed to watching a movie. Tabatha Zimiga was outstanding as the lead, believable and raw, while Porshia Zimiga delivers a beautiful narration and heartfelt performance. Read on for more info about this unique movie and watch a trailer of the film.

East of Wall was written and directed by Kate Beecroft. It stars Tabatha Zimiga, Porshia Zimiga, Scoot McNairy, and Jennifer Ehle. Kate Beecroft spent three years in South Dakota, embedding herself in the life of the Zimiga family and their community. The film is inspired by Tabatha Zimiga's real life.

The Jersey Momma's Thoughts About East of Wall (Spoiler-Free)

I know I’m *just* a blogger, but when it came time for me to sit down and give my honest review of East of Wall, I hoped I could do it justice. Because as I watched the screener, I knew this movie was a piece of art. Kate Beecroft put her heart and soul into this film- the writing, the cinematography, the music- everything flows together so beautifully- I fell in love with this family, too. I truly believe the universe places us on the right roads to our passions and dreams, but we don’t often follow them.  Maybe the roads seem too rocky or the dream seems ridiculous, so we avoid the universe’s suggestions and plow a different path that might not truly be meant for us. I am glad that Kate Beecroft found her story in the universe to share with the rest of us. It’s not just a film about a typical family and horses- it’s proof that the connections we make with other people can be so powerful, that grief is life-altering, and, as Tabatha says in the film, 'it's important for you to know when you're fucking good at something.' And once you find that something, don’t let anyone take it from you, or try to buy you or change you.
Do yourself a favor and check out East of Wall. You'll be glad you did.
