Here's my picture book pick for August! What Should Danny Do? by Ganit and Adir Levy is not to be missed! I receive a lot of books as samples for consideration and review. I have never seen one quite like the 'Power to Choose' series featuring Danny. I highly recommend it for home and classroom use! Read on for more details, and I know you'll agree.

Disclosure: I received sample copies of What Should Danny Do? in exchange for an honest review. This book is a keeper, trust me! This post contains Amazon affiliate links. You can read more about affiliate links on my Disclosure page.

About The Power to Choose Series

What Should Danny Do? by Adir and Ganit Levy is not your typical picture book. Yes, it has an awesome underlying message about making wise choices, but the way it's presented to kids is not your typical storyline! Here's what they have to say about it on Amazon:

"9 Stories in 1! What Should Danny Do? is an innovative, interactive book that empowers kids with the understanding that their choices will shape their days, and ultimately their lives into what they will be. Written in a "Choose Your Own Story" style, the book follows Danny, a Superhero-in-Training, through his day as he encounters choices that kids face on a daily basis. As your children navigate through the different story lines, they will begin to realize that their choices for Danny shaped his day into what it became. And in turn, their choices for themselves will shape their days, and ultimately their lives, into what they will be.Boys and girls both love and relate to Danny, while enjoying the interactive nature of the book--they never know what will come next! Parents and Teachers love the social-emotional skills the book teaches through empowering kids to make positive choices while demonstrating the natural consequences to negative choices. A "must-have" on every bookshelf."

How it Works

If you remember the 'Choose Your Own Adventure' books from the 80's, this picture book is similar. There are symbols the reader can follow to help them navigate the book (very basic symbols, don't worry).

Every few pages, Danny is faced with a dilemma and must make a choice. As the reader, you can choose what Danny will do, and turn to the page of the choice you pick.

What's really fun about this is book that you can see how Danny's choices affect how his day will go, along with the positive and negative consequences of his decisions. When you make good choices for Danny, you can see all of the positive results that follow for him. But when you make a negative choice for Danny, you can see what occurs and realize what he missed out on because of these decisions.

Why I Love This Series

This book series has 9 different stories in one, so kids can go back and change Danny's decisions in the story. I read this book with my son once through, and then he chuckled and said, 'Okay, now let's make Bad Danny choices!' So we were able to keep reading the story with various outcomes. It was fun to see what would happen and compare the result of each decision.

The illustrations are adorable and vibrant. I even loved the font that the book was written in.

The hardcover book is high-quality. I think it would make a great gift for anyone, teachers included! This book series is a fun independent read, but I also love, love, love the idea of using this as a read-aloud in a classroom. Teachers, counselors and homeschool families will appreciate the ability to get the kids involved and have them suggest choices for Danny as the book is read aloud to them.
