The Jersey Momma's Review

I really enjoyed Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase! I think it was a wonderful modern adaptation of a classic, and Sophia Lillis was awesome. You know your child best, but I would say this is geared towards teens and tweens (and maybe adult fans of the beloved books series!). There are positive messages within, especially about empathy, kindness, girl power, and bravery. There are also some serious issues tackled, like cyberbullying, hallucinogenic drugs, and of course, villains and mysterious happenings around town. But I didn't think anything was overly frightening or scary (not for tweens and teens, anyway - that's the age group I personally recommend it for, too). If you're concerned about scariness factor, language (which I thought was mild), or any other issues, please check out the detailed review at Common Sense Media.

About the Film

Here's a little blurb right from the movie press release:

After the death of his wife, Carson Drew decides to leave Chicago behind and make a fresh start with his 16-year-old daughter, Nancy, in River Heights. Nancy is asked by Flora to help solve the ghostly activity at her home, the Twin Elms Mansion. Can she help explain the creaking footsteps, exploding light bulbs and an ominous creature? Is it the handiwork of high-school bully Derek Barnes? Or is it possible that the ghost of original owner Malcolm Colfax is back for revenge? Recruiting her best friends George and Bess, along with local 'mean girl' Helen, Nancy Drew is on the case!

Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase stars:

Sophia Lillis (IT and Sharp Objects) as Nancy Drew
Sam Trammell (True Blood and This is Us) as Carson Drew (Nancy’s father)
Linda Lavin (The Good Wife and Alice) as Flora
Andrea Anders (Joey and Better Off Ted) as Hannah (Nancy’s Aunt)
Laura Slade Wiggins (Shameless) as Helen
Zoe Renee (The Quad) as George
Mackenzie Graham (The Purge) as Bess

Blu-Ray DVD Extras

The Blu-Ray DVD also contains special features, including:

  2. I've read all the books from 1-50 in hardback form. I started in about sixth grade and continued through junior high and high school. I actually found some of my mom's old Nancy Drew books from the 1940's which were blue backed hard backs. I still have those along with all the ones my parents bought me through the years :)
