DIY Cell Phone Coop : The No Cell Phone Challenge!

Friday, November 5, 2021
Have you heard of the cell phone family challenge? A 'cell phone coop,' encourages families not only to silence their phones, but to actually put them away while enjoying meals or family time. It's a creative way to disconnect from smart phones and tablets, at least for a little while. Check out the cell phone coop we created for our devices here at home!

All it Takes is a Shoebox!

Family members can each make their own box, or you can make one large one for the whole family. I used a flip-top shoebox, and decided to decorate it simply with permanent markers, colored pencils, paper and clear packing tape. This box already had a small hole in the side, which was perfect for the charger. So our box served a dual purpose- it was also a charging station!

I thought it would be funny to create a place that our phones would 'want' to be in - a cell phone retreat, aptly named The Cell Hotel (where the motto is, STAY, REST, RECHARGE - those phones get tired, you know).

The idea is to park your cell phones in there for the duration of the meal. They have to be turned to silent (this is a quality hotel, after all!).

We even drew beds for our phones inside the box hotel. I figured they should be as comfy as possible in this establishment!

The Jersey Momma's Boy is still young, so cell phones at the table are not a huge issue for us just yet. But it's still a nice way for us all to remember what's important. At this point I think we need a place for The Jersey Momma's Boy to keep his tablet, since he's always glued to that. So perhaps this would work better...

And momma needs to close her laptop, which is always open on the dinner table, and such a bad habit, too! So maybe we need one of these

What do you think? Can you do it? Go ahead and try the Cell Phone Challenge!
